Alicia and I found the format fascinating, and the story itself stirred up some intriguing questions, sparking a prolonged debate about the essentials for a successful marriage.

The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet - By Bernie Su and Kate Rorick

We're ending our modern variations run with The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet, a book based on a YouTube series based on Pride and Prejudice. Lizzie Bennet is a 24 year old grad student navigating the world with the help of her best friend, Charlotte Lu, and her sisters, Jane and Lydia. When Bing Lee buys a house and moves to town with his sister and best friend, everyone's lives are changed forever. 
Emilie and Alicia, die-hard fans of the YouTube series (seriously, binge it if you haven't!), spill the tea on their mixed feelings about the book version. Is it a cool twist to the story, or just a cash grab riding on the series' fame?

In a complete reversal from our usual pattern, this week we read a book that ALICIA has read before, but Emilie has not! An imperfect heroine surrounded by likewise imperfect (but endearing) characters, Bridget Jones is indisputably a cultural icon and the book made a lot of waves when it was published. But does the book live up to the hype?

The Unforgettable Mr. Darcy - By Victoria Kincaid

Amnesia is bad enough, but Elizabeth gets a double whammy when she's stranded in France during the Napoleonic Wars and has no idea who she is (or how to speak French). Luckily, Darcy, believing she is dead, volunteers to be a spy in France, and through a crazy set of circumstances  they end up fleeing the continent together...all while Elizabeth believes Darcy is her husband (oops). 
After a couple of weightier variations, both Alicia and Emilie agree that this is a light and fun variation to curl up with. As always, more than just the plot is discussed! So, kick back, relax, and enjoy The Unforgettable Mr. Darcy!

The Crimes of Elizabeth Darcy - By Sophie C. Turner

Darcy is lost at sea...or was he? Four years after his supposed death, Darcy returns to London with an inconvenient case of amnesia to find that his wife married a horrible man in his absence. With many twists and turns (including a trial, treasure, and murder!) this tale had us on the edge of our seats wondering, "What NOW?"
Despite (or maybe due to) the crazy premise, this book had us pondering how reframing tragedy can impact us, the role of nature vs. nurture in child rearing, and the importance of sharing burdens with others--even if there is nothing they can do about it.

A Man of Good Fortune - By Ali Scott

Mr. Darcy has amnesia--and he's not sure who to trust! While Elizabeth dodges his questions and seemingly conspires with Colonel Fitzwilliam (and possibly Wickham?!) behind his back, Darcy struggles to reconcile who he is now with the life he thought he wanted. 
Alicia and Emilie question whether their enjoyment of an amnesia storyline correlates to *who* has amnesia, debate if it's Darcy or Elizabeth who's acting paranoid, and examine the philosophical question of whether happiness is just the absence of sadness.
